SYNOPSIS

Gil Soo-Hyun (Kim Kang-Woo) is extremely intelligent. At the age of 10, Gil Soo-Hyun attended Harvard University. After graduating there, he decided to work at the FBI and worked there for 10 years. Afterwards, he decided to come back to South Korea. He now works as the leader of the Special Missing Persons Unit. The unit deals with about 1% of special missing cases involving violent crimes. His appearance borders on perfection, but he holds a secret. Detective Oh Dae-Young (Park Hee-Soon) joins the Special Missing Persons Unit. He has worked as a detective for 20 years and he has an obsession in observing the law. He is known as a master of missing person cases. [AsianWiki] [Like TEN after deflation!]

IN SHORT

It's a good thing the mentally agile (?) horde of marketing analysts at CJ headquarters named this show “missing noir” (along with the catchy M, because you know that at least twelve people spent sleepless nights trying to come up with something incredibly trendy to tag it with), as that's exactly what is missing in this technically competent but creatively bankrupt copycat of a show. That's the problem when you're trapped into a vicious cycle of brand image compliance: everything feels interchangeable, dispensable, devoid of any flair. Put this show and the 특수사건전담반 (TEN) saga side by side and you'll see patterns that can't simply be explained by a common director-cum-executive producer like Lee Seung-Young – who has never excelled but used to be a decent talent before the CJ machine got to him. Go a step further and you see way too many similarities with other OCN shows in storytelling structure, characterization, and even the look and sound of the show – and arguing that it's more or less the same people who are planning and shooting these shows doesn't fall under the “establishing a style” spectrum. You add insipid and overly mechanical thespians like Kim Gang-Woo, eternally miscast Park Hee-Soon and charisma-less Kang Ha-Neul to the mix and there is little this show can do to dispel fears that it'll turn out into yet another empty procedural which "starts with a bang," aimlessly wanders in tepid waters of US TV syndication-like mediocrity, and then try to wrap everything up nicely in a two-part finale. Where is the noir ambiance, the ethical chiaroscuro, that pathos that made real noir dramas like 무정도시 (Cruel City) shine? This is just yet another attempt to create a shiny and ready-made product to add to CJ's arsenal of copycats, and if anything is missing here, it's real dramas.
