IN SHORT

A wolf in sheep's clothing if I ever saw one – or maybe the last 15 years of KBS weekend home dramas have taught me to expect the worst. Still, we start placid enough, with a couple of long established staples of the canon: chaebol CEO trying to help his immature kid grow some common sense by having him “pay his dues;” and the hard-working, lower middle-class wholesome boy your grandma would want you to marry (if you're a woman, or she's… rather progressive) displaying uncanny dedication and perseverance. Yay! If you work hard enough and be positive everything is possible in the land of obsessive social typecasting-via-specs, even possibly maybe perhaps discovering there's a foul-smelling rat somewhere in the room and some kind of secret of birth might be part of the ordeal. Right? Because just talking about normal, nonsociopathic people having realistic life problems would be too boring, or perhaps remind too much of 미생 (Misaeng) – the hilariously inept argument some esteemed gentlemen in the media made about this show's initial lack of pizzazz, as if that kind of working environment focus wasn't a painfully overused plot device already (research, stupid!) or the cult tvN show achieved anything special other than offering something slightly different than tvN's brand of flimsy TV chick-lit. Nonetheless, at least for now we can bask in the quiet before the storm, with somewhat relaxed directing by Ji Byung-Heon (who in spite of his rather makjang-y pedigree has a decent handle of the basics) and a passable cast (no highlights other than the usual veterans so far, but also no stinkers). Still, it's Choi Hyeon-Gyeong and the KBS weekend canon. If you think raging makjang will not become part of the equation sooner than later, head to Western Union because my Nigerian buddies want to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn.
