SYNOPSIS

Whether a man and a woman become lovers or enemies depends on a fateful encounter. Revolving around work life at a TV network, this story is about young people who believe in destiny. [MBC Global Media]

IN SHORT

After all these years of bizarre shenanigans, arcane daydreaming, not-too-subtle dissing of rival programs and obsessive attention to naming details, one wonders if makjang queen Im Seong-Han is merely going on autopilot because the industry’s inevitable decline forces her to. It’s not because she can’t live up to her momentous past of weirdness, as that’s still in top form – for instance, she basically manages to secure an unlikely marriage permission for our leading lady by having her thrown into a pool and pinched around by her rival, ruining Evil Mother-In-Law’s plans for the usual, run-of-the-mill contract marriage (!). It’s that sneaking sensation that she’s feeling pressured to revert back to her calling card, lest the tired, formulaic story she’s building might leave the audience bored. Take that gimmick off and you get the usual Im Seong-Han drama: characterization is better than your usual makjang potboiler (I know, that’s not saying much) and all the urgency that characterizes this canon is generally toned down, sans the occasional appearance of the aforementioned exploits. But Bae Han-Cheon’s hamfisted direction (with particularly grating musical choices) doesn’t help.
